The Kindergarten program at Heritage School fully prepares children to enter first grade by providing a classical approach to early academics while striving to center the students’ hearts on Christ. Bible lessons, Bible memory work, character building activities, accompanied by foundational lessons in phonics, math, handwriting, science, and social studies provide the structure for daily learning.
Key to the success of the Kindergarten program are daily read aloud times, during which students are exposed to a feast of classic children’s literature.
Listening to fine books, such as Old Mother West Wind, encourages students to exercise skills in prediction and narration, as well as providing a model for fluent reading. A life-long love of reading and learning is a gift that serves a student well over the course of his/her life.
Beyond the homeroom setting, students at the Kindergarten level engage in active play outdoors, physical education, art, and music classes. The children learn about great artists as they participate in picture studies; they also learn basic design principles as they do various art projects. They learn about great composers by listening to classical music selections, and they learn basic music concepts by participating in singing, playing Orff instruments, and dancing.
Children and their parents, along with their teacher, enjoy frequent field trips to take in a play, a symphony or visit an art exhibit or to explore nature by visiting the zoo or a ranch for nature study.
As students explore all academic and creative subjects through our classical approach to learning, they are encouraged to observe, record, and appreciate the beauty of God’s glorious Creation.
