The Trivium & Curriculum

At Heritage School, the curriculum is informed by the school’s Mission Statement: “Heritage School provides a distinctive classical Christ-centered education that prepares students for servant leadership and lives that glorify God.” We further seek to equip our graduates to: Exemplify Christ; Think critically, speak articulately, write effectively; Pursue learning; and to Persevere. All curriculum decisions are guided by our classical and Christ-centered approach. High expectations for each student and quality materials are the hallmark of Heritage School. Books are selected which challenge thinking and exemplify excellent writing.

Because the curriculum is designed to equip our graduates to be servant leaders in their communities and churches and throughout the world, our faculty teaches from a biblical, Christ-centered worldview, integrating faith with learning. We provide instruction in the history and doctrine of the Christian faith as well as Bible study, apologetics, and ethics. Our teachers follow the classical model outlined by the Trivium with an eye toward developing reading, learning, discerning, thinking, and rhetorical skills in every student, beginning with the youngest students. The faculty provides and models service through opportunities in our community or by planning summer projects away from the Hill Country for high school students.

We embrace a core curriculum for each grade including language arts, history, mathematics, science, foreign language, and study of the Bible. In addition, our students enjoy art, music, drama, nature study, picture study, logic, and rhetoric. Students in grades K-10 take physical education and almost 85% of our upper school students participate in co-curricular sports. Students in K-2 enjoy simple pre-Latin exercises; formal Latin study begins in third grade and continues through eighth grade. High school students take three years of Spanish. Students in grades K-6 take monthly field trips which extend the experience of the classroom and students in 7-12 travel throughout Texas or to other states or countries. Further, all students participate in various service projects.

The curriculum is designed to progress logically and build precept upon precept for each subject, K-12. For upper school courses, the classes are taught at an “honors” or AP level. Challenging the above-average student, the curriculum works as well with the average learner since class sizes are limited to 15 in K-6 and 15-20 in grades 7-12. In addition, a high premium is placed on healthy relationships and strong community. Heritage School faculty manifests sincere love and concern for every student and encourages and works in close partnership with students and parents to facilitate student success.

The Trivium Curriculum

The beauty of the classical curriculum is that it dwells on one problem, one author, or one epoch long enough to allow even the youngest student a chance to exercise his mind in a scholarly way: to make connections and to trace developments, lines of reasoning, patterns of action, recurring symbolisms, plots, and motifs.
